As Sr. Product Designer, I designed Placeit by Envato’s integration inside Canva, distilling a huge, feature-rich product into a focused side-panel plugin. By meeting users where they were already designing, we turned Canva into an organic acquisition channel: +140% organic traffic and 2,803 new active users in 3 months, with $0 spent on paid acquisition.
Increase in organic traffic.
New active users acquired in just three months.
Spent on paid acquisition. 100% Product-Led Growth.
Placeit has a massive library of high-quality mockups, but the journey was broken. Users would generate a basic mockup on Placeit, download it, and immediately jump to Canva to finish the job: cropping for social, adding text, and placing UI elements.
The goal: capture users where they were already designing. We needed a bridge between both platforms, turning Canva into an organic acquisition channel for Envato.
Every hand-off was a chance to lose the user.
The biggest hurdle was abstracting complexity. Placeit is a huge, feature-rich product. My challenge was to distill that massive architecture into the essential features users actually cared about, and fit them inside a highly constrained environment: a Canva side-panel plugin.
I mapped the legacy journey and focused entirely on eliminating context switching. The new flow had to feel native to Canva while keeping Placeit’s core value.
I ruthlessly optimized the flow to reduce cognitive load, auditing both platforms and stripping any Placeit feature redundant to Canva’s editor. Every click removed was a win for retention.
Designing for an external ecosystem has strict technical rules. I worked hand-in-hand with engineering from day one, navigating Canva’s API limits to balance what was feasible with the best experience.
A simple, intent-driven architecture. Every redundant step removed.
By abstracting a complex product into a focused, intent-driven plugin, we eliminated the need to download and re-upload files. The result was a frictionless experience that not only retained current users but drove a 140% spike in organic traffic, proving the power of a well-executed Product-Led Growth strategy.
